Who we are: Guardians of the Light.

Lights ON 4 Democracy is a nonpartisan, community-led movement dedicated to making our shared civic values visible.

Founded in St. Augustine, Florida, the oldest continuously inhabited European-established settlement in the United States, we believe that the flame of democracy is best tended at the local level, street by street and window by window.

Our mission is to prepare the nation for its 250th Anniversary in 2026 by creating a nationwide tapestry of light. We don't just advocate for democracy; we signal our commitment to it through simple, powerful symbols that transcend modern divides.

Four Pillars of Democracy

Democracy functions through the consent of the governed and the protection of individual rights, while authoritarian systems rely on the concentration of absolute power. Our initiative highlights four pillars that keep a society truly free and accountable: Voting and Civil Rights, Free Press, Rule of Law. Lighting your window is a way to choose the path of open participation over the darkness of centralized control.

Lights ON 4 Democracy made easy.

Electric Plug-In Candles with a light sensor are easy to use: Auto ON at night, OFF in daytime.

We looked for ones with good reviews (4.4 or better). LED bulbs are low energy, stay cool and last 15,000 hours.

Bulb Example: C7LED Decorative bulb 0.6W 50LM (7 watts equivalent).

TIP: A little tape on the base helped stabilize the candle. This made it possible to place the candles higher; more visible from the street and out of reach of children and grandchildren. →

Important: Make time to read and follow manufacturer’s instructions.

After trying different kinds of candles, we learned:

Many candles with batteries are not very visible on the street. You must remember to buy and change batteries.

Electric candles with an on-off switch are a hassle. You have to keep remembering to turn them on and off!

Old incandescent bulbs use way more energy, and they are hot.

Wax candles with a real flame especially near curtains are dangerous. We didn’t ever try this.

Doorpost Stickers make it clear WHY we have Lights ON 4 Democracy.

We recommend placing the 3 X 6 inch sticker (7.5 X 15cm) on your doorpost right as you enter the door at eye level about 5 feet (152cm).

We chose vinyl stickers because the image lasts a long time, and they peel off without shredding.

Many condominiums prohibit signs. These smaller stickers may work.

We worked up many versions of the stickers. We settled on the image of a plug-in electric candle

and clear wording.

  • In 1940, during the Nazi occupation of Norway, citizens were forbidden from wearing any symbols of their King or their national identity. In a brilliant act of "silent protest," students at Oslo University began wearing a simple paperclip on their lapels.

  • During the dark years of martial law in Poland in the early 1980s, the "Solidarity" (Solidarność) movement faced immense suppression. In a powerful display of defiance, Polish citizens, and eventually people across the globe, including Pope John Paul II and President Ronald Reagan placed burning candles in their windows

  • History is not just something we read; it is something we inhabit. By launching Lights ON for Democracy in St. Augustine, Florida, we are making a deliberate statement about the longevity of the American experiment.

  • "Lights ON for Democracy" is a nonprofit initiative operated with a commitment to radical transparency. We believe that democracy is a public good, not a commercial product. Every dollar contributed, whether through a direct donation or the purchase of an advocacy kit, is reinvested into the movement.

  • July 4, 2026, marks the Semiquincentennial (250th anniversary) of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. While many will celebrate with fireworks, we believe the most meaningful tribute is a visible, nationwide commitment to the principles that made that declaration possible.
