Light up what we are for
Lights ON 4 Democracy is a beautiful way to signal the shared values that hold a democracy together. Here is how to start.
Put a Democracy Light in your window
Make it easy. Use a plug-in electric candle or a night light with a light sensor, so it goes on at night and off during the day. Put it in your most visible window, and your light will be on for democracy tonight.
Tips on electric candles and LED bulbs →Let people know why your light is on
Get a Lights ON 4 Democracy yard sign, a sticker for your front door frame, or both.
Visit the shop →Share your Democracy Light
Email a photo of your light to four people who would love this. Then post it on Nextdoor and your social media.

Lights ON 4 Democracy is a community-based project that invites people to put plug-in electric candles or night lights in their windows in 2026 and 2027.
The nonprofit Compassionate St. Augustine launched the initiative in St. Augustine, Florida, in 2025, and it quickly spread to other states and countries. The aim is for these lights to stay visible over an extended period, as a global signal that most people want to live in free and transparent societies, with governments of the people, by the people and for the people.
This is a nonpartisan movement. No party, no candidate, no endorsement — just the shared values that hold a democracy together.
To encourage broad participation, images and guidelines created by Lights ON 4 Democracy are shared freely for nonprofit purposes. Find them under Free Downloadable Resources.
